Originated in large part with highland warriors who would dance over and around swords in one dance and on a targe (a shield with a sharp spike of steel coming out of the center) in another. The dances done today still require the stamina & agility the military leaders would look for in their retinue at arms but in a safe way (no spikes of steel involved). The plyometric element of the dance form will help athletes with their power and speed.
Although the Sword dance and the Highland Fling described above are also danced by girls today, Highland dance has transformed into a style that also has a strong foundation in ballet. This style of dance is great for perfectionists, complements the demands of sports by building strong legs and stamina and utilizes ballet technique in a new way. Highland is also accessible to those with little to no dance background. |
